Adaptive AI for Autonomous Drone Systems

Kingston University United Kingdom

Autonomous drone systems are expected to play an increasingly important role in applications such as environmental monitoring, infrastructure inspection, disaster response, precision agriculture, and search and rescue. As these systems become more capable and are deployed in increasingly complex environments, they must operate safely, efficiently, and collaboratively while adapting to uncertain, dynamic, and partially observable conditions. Developing intelligent decision-making algorithms that enable autonomous drones to perceive, reason, learn, and cooperate remains one of the key challenges in modern artificial intelligence and robotics.

This PhD project will investigate adaptive AI techniques for autonomous drone systems, with a particular focus on multi-agent coordination, sequential decision-making, and learning under uncertainty. The research will explore a range of modern AI approaches, including reinforcement learning, transformer-based architectures, world models, diffusion policies, robotics foundation models, and vision-language-action models. Depending on the direction of the project, one or more of these methods will be developed individually or combined to enable more robust, scalable, and adaptable autonomous behaviour.

A central aim of the research is to develop intelligent algorithms capable of coordinating multiple drones operating in cooperative, competitive, or mixed environments. Research topics include multi-agent learning, adaptive planning, robust decision-making, efficient coordination and communication, hierarchical control, sample-efficient learning, safe exploration, and learning from limited or imperfect observations. The project may also investigate human-in-the-loop autonomy, multimodal perception, or hybrid approaches that integrate model-based reasoning with data-driven learning.

The research will primarily be conducted using high-fidelity simulation environments, enabling rigorous development and evaluation of novel AI algorithms under realistic operating conditions. Where appropriate, the project may also explore sim-to-real transfer techniques to improve the deployment of learned policies on physical robotic platforms and reduce the gap between simulation and real-world performance.

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to contribute to the next generation of intelligent autonomous systems by developing next-generation AI methods for autonomous perception, planning, coordination, and decision-making. The project offers considerable flexibility, allowing the research direction to be tailored to the candidate’s interests while addressing important challenges at the intersection of artificial intelligence, robotics, machine learning, and autonomous systems.

Electus Recruitment Solutions London, England

Integration Manager – UAV Systems London with European Travel UAV / Aerospace / Defence Competitive Package We are recruiting an Integration Manager for a rapidly growing UK autonomous systems business developing and manufacturing advanced UAV platforms for international defence customers. This is a technically focused integration and delivery position responsible for bringing together airframe structures, mechanical systems, avionics, electronics, propulsion and associated sub-systems into completed UAV platforms. We are specifically looking for someone who has previously been responsible for the physical build and integration of complex engineered products. If your background is primarily project management without significant engineering, manufacturing or integration experience, this is unlikely to be the right role. The role You will take ownership of UAV integration from the availability of components and major sub-assemblies through to completed, configured and test-ready aircraft. Working across engineering, production, quality, supply chain and specialist subcontractors, you will be responsible for ensuring aircraft are built to the correct specification, configuration, quality and delivery schedule. Key responsibilities will include:Owning the end-to-end build and integration plan for complete UAV platformsCoordinating the integration of composite airframes, mechanical assemblies, avionics, electronics, propulsion and electrical systemsManaging build sequence and ensuring components and sub-assemblies are available at the correct point in the integration programmeUnderstanding and managing mechanical and electrical interfaces between aircraft sub-systemsReviewing engineering drawings, BOMs, build documentation and manufacturing instructionsEnsuring the correct engineering configuration is maintained throughout aircraft buildWorking directly with engineering teams to resolve build and integration problemsManaging engineering changes through the build processInvestigating integration failures, non-conformances and recurring build issuesDriving root-cause analysis and corrective actionsCoordinating system-level testing and fault-finding activityEnsuring completed aircraft are ready for acceptance and subsequent customer deliveryManaging production and quality engineering activity at subcontractor sitesDriving subcontractor performance against technical, quality and delivery requirementsIdentifying integration and production risks before they impact programme deliveryImproving build methodology, integration processes and manufacturing repeatability as volumes increaseThe role involves working closely with integration partners in Poland and the Netherlands, so regular European travel will be required. Essential experience We are looking for candidates who can demonstrate significant experience in complex systems integration, vehicle/aircraft build or multidisciplinary manufacturing. You should have strong experience across several of the following:Integration of complex electro-mechanical products or platformsAircraft, UAV, vehicle or similarly complex system buildMechanical assembly and installationElectrical and electronic systems integrationWiring looms, harnesses, connectors and electrical installationAvionics or embedded electronic systemsPower distribution and electrical architecturesPropulsion system installation/integrationStructural and mechanical interfacesConfiguration management and build configuration controlEngineering drawings and technical documentationBills of Materials / BOM controlEngineering Change Requests / OrdersManufacturing and assembly instructionsNon-conformance managementRoot Cause Analysis / corrective actionProduction engineeringSystem-level fault findingVerification, test and acceptance activitySupplier or subcontract manufacturing managementCrucially, you need to understand how individual mechanical, electrical and electronic systems come together to create a functioning complete product. Your background Direct UAV experience would be highly attractive, but it isn't mandatory. Strong candidates could come from: UAV / UAS Aerospace Defence Formula 1 / Motorsport Advanced Automotive Robotics Autonomous Systems Complex Electro-Mechanical Manufacturing We are particularly interested in candidates from environments where:products are technically complexbuild volumes are relatively lowspecifications continue to evolveengineering changes need to be introduced quicklyquality standards are demandingdelivery deadlines cannot moveThis makes Formula 1 and high-performance motorsport particularly interesting backgrounds alongside UAV and aerospace. What we don't need This is not a pure Programme Manager, Project Manager or general Production Manager position. You must have enough technical and manufacturing understanding to walk onto an integration floor, understand what is preventing a system from being completed, challenge the relevant engineering discipline and drive the problem through to resolution. You'll combine that technical credibility with the organisation and leadership required to keep multiple aircraft, suppliers, engineers and production activities aligned. The opportunity You'll join the business at a point where it is moving from relatively low-volume builds towards significantly greater production. That means you'll have the opportunity to influence how aircraft are: built integrated configured tested released industrialised If you have previously taken responsibility for getting complex aircraft, vehicles or electro-mechanical platforms successfully through build and integration, we'd like to hear from you

UFORCE London

UFORCE is a combat-systems integrator transforming Ukrainian battlefield experience into deployable defence technology for allied nations. Built by Ukrainian practitioners and global technology leaders, UFORCE brings together unmanned air, sea, and land systems, software, command-and-control, and operational expertise into one adaptive combat architecture.
Our mission is to make defence dramatically faster, more scalable, and more cost-effective than traditional military systems — helping free nations deter aggression by making defence 100× cheaper than offence. We are building a new category of defence company: combat-proven, open to allied integration, shaped by real-world frontline experience, and focused on protecting democratic societies at speed.
 About the role
UFORCE is building its UK maritime operations capability and is looking for an experienced Operator / Coxswain to support safe, credible operational activity.
This hands-on role covers crewed vessels, USV operations, customer demonstrations, trials and foreign-user training. You’ll work across programme delivery, engineering, systems and training teams to turn operational plans into safe, assured outcomes.
You’ll bring strong maritime credibility, practical Coxswain judgement and the discipline to operate with limited direction in a sensitive defence technology environment.

 What you’ll do

Plan and execute maritime activity, including briefings, launch and recovery, communications, debriefs and post-run checks.

Act as Coxswain / operator during demonstrations, trials, training and internal testing.

Support safe USV operations, including operating envelopes, handovers, emergency procedures and coordination with crewed vessels.

Train military, government, partner-force and customer users.

Work with engineering and systems teams to prepare activity, capture defects and improve operational readiness.

Brief plans, risks, limitations and tactical considerations to internal leaders, customers and senior stakeholders.

Maintain high standards of security, export-control awareness and customer sensitivity.
